Meet the Candidate

Lisa Marie Barron

Lisa-Marie Barron Nanaimo-Ladysmith NDP Candidate

Lisa Marie Barron was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Ladysmith in 2021. She served as the NDP Critic for Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, in addition to the Critic for Democratic Reform.

In the community she has called home for 30 years, Lisa Marie is known to be a voice for human rights, and a champion for affordability, ocean protection, and accessible, public health care. She is determined to continue advocating for policies and legislation that truly works for people and the planet.

During her time in Parliament, Lisa Marie and her colleagues launched a national dental care plan, passed a federal pharmacare program into law, created an affordable housing protection fund, and fought to protect pension plans. Lisa Marie has pushed for improved disability benefits, seniors’ supports, and workers’ rights, and put forward legislation to protect the health of our oceans by safeguarding food security, marine safety, and ecosystems.

Lisa Marie has built strong relationships with many local organizations, service providers, and cultural associations, including working alongside the business community to prioritize Canadian jobs and products in response to trade war imposed by the United States that is threatening our prosperity and sovereignty. She has also been a vocal advocate for protecting Canadian democracy from foreign interference, and tax fairness to hold ultra-wealthy CEOs accountable.

Lisa Marie believes there is more that unites us than divides us, and that there is no place for racism and discrimination in our country. She stands firmly in support of Indigenous rights and titles, and is pushing for all the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to be implemented. Lisa Marie voted in favour of the Red Dress Alert for missing Indigenous women, girls, and two spirit peoples, and recognizes the residential school system as an act of genocide. She values the diversity in our communities and stands for equity and inclusion.

Prior to her election, Lisa Marie worked in a variety of community and social work settings including as a community school coordinator, Nanaimo-Ladysmith school board trustee, women’s centre coordinator, and youth mental health and supportive recovery navigator.

As a single mother who raised two kids while completing her bachelor’s degree from Vancouver Island University, Lisa Marie knows first-hand the challenges people face in achieving financial security. She understands the disproportionate impacts of the affordability crisis, and she is committed to fighting for change that benefits everyone.
